Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the sacred religious place of Tadkeshwar Mahadev temple is situated in the Lansdowne area of Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 2,092 metres. Being one of the Sidha Peethas and famous temples of Uttarakhand, thousands of Hindus come to offer prayers at Tadkeshwar Mahadev every year. Devotees believe that Tadkeshwar Mahadev fullfills every wish.
The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated here with exhilaration and religious fervour. This temple is surrounded by acorn and cedar trees, which enhances its natural beauty. Besides this, many small waterfalls are also situated around the temple. There is also a sacred furrow, kund in the temple. It is said that it was formed by Lakshmi, the Kund Devi. The sacred water of this kund is offered to the Shivalingam, enshrined in the temple.
According to the legend prevalent about this famous temple, a demon named Tadkasur did the severe penance in order to attract the attention of Lord shiva, who blessed him with the gift of immortality. But Tadkasur started misusing the blessing and killed the numerous saints. At this, the saints sought help from Lord Shiva. Viewing the pathetic condition of saints, Lord Shiva’s son Kartike slaughtered Tadkasur. While dying, Tadkasur prayed and apologised for his heinous acts before Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shiva proclaimed that the people in Kalayuga would worship Tadkasur in the name of Lord Shiva.
Soon after this incidence, the Lord Shiva rested here for a while. But He felt a wave of heat while taking rest. Seeing this, Mata Parvati implanted seven cedar trees here to provide shadow to Lord Shiva. Astonishingly, one can find exact seven trees in the yard of Tadkeshwar Mahadev temple. The name of Tadkeshwar Mahadev is also found in the holy book of Ramayana. It is said that Tadkeshwar Mahadev never disappoints his devotees. After getting their wishes or vows fulfilled, the devotees hang bells on the temple’s wall.
