Paragpur in Himachal Pradesh is the first Heritage village of India

Heritage Village Paragpur

Located at an altitude of 1800 feet above sea level in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Paragpur is a popular tourist destination situated amidst scenic natural beauty. The Government of Himachal Pradesh declared Paragpur a heritage village in 1997. It is believed that this village was established nearly three centuries ago. Here, one can witness the glimpses of traditional architecture in mud-plastered walls and slate-roofed houses, old shops, roads and cobbled lanes.

Many historical and religious places can be seen in India’s first heritage village of Paragpur. There is a beautiful pond named Taal situated in the middle of the village. The Taal is surrounded by Radhakrishan temple and several old community structures including Nehar Bhawan, Naun and Dhunichand Bhardial Serai. Established 100 years ago, Bhutanese abode here attracts tourists immensely. Constructed around 300 years ago in Indo-European architecture style, the Judge’s Court of Paragpur is also one of the chief highlights here. Nearly 200 years old Kuthiyala buildings complex and Chaujjar mansion are also located in Paragpur. Apart from this, the old ornamental water tank, which came into being in 1880, is also worth seeing.

Paragpur is also famous for its cotton-woven fabrics. The tourists who come here show interest in purchasing woolen bed sheets and shawls. The whole village is surrounded by beautiful tea gardens. The summers are not too hot here, as the temperature during this season varies between 20° C to 32° C. Whereas during winter it remains between 16° C to 25° C. The best time to travel Paragpar is during summer or monsoon when the temperature remains pleasant.

How to reach Paragpur

Tourists can use any mode of transport including air, rail or road while travelling to Paragpur. Gaggal airport in Kangra, which is very much connected to Chandigarh and Delhi, is just 45 kms away from Paragpur. One can hire a taxi or take a bus from Kangra to reach here. The nearest major railway station from Paragpar is located 67 kilometers away at Una. This railway station is directly connected with many cities including Delhi in India. Paragpar is very much connected with roads and one can get a bus from Amritsar, Chandigarh and Pathankot to reach here.
